Dark Side of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Part 2

This biro pen drawing is my representation of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that exists beneath the surface yet shapes every movement, every sensation, every limit. It is often unseen, misunderstood, or dismissed, but for those who live with it, the body never lets you forget.

The figure hangs suspended, almost puppet like, held upright not by strength, but by tension. Threads stretch across the body, binding, pulling, and supporting all at once. They represent the fragile balance of living in a body that does not hold itself together in the way it should. Stability becomes something external, something managed, rather than something natural.

The posture is neither relaxed nor controlled, it is caught somewhere in between. Limbs appear loose, weightless, yet heavy with strain. There is a sense of collapse held just at bay, as though the body could give way at any moment. This reflects the constant awareness of joints, of pain, of limits that shift without warning.

At the centre, the darkness within the torso draws attention to what cannot be seen. Ehlers Danlos is not always visible to others, but internally it can feel consuming. The contrast between the delicate, almost unraveling linework and the heavier shadows speaks to that duality, the outward appearance versus the internal reality.

The head tilts, eyes closed, not in peace, but in exhaustion. There is a quiet resignation here, but also endurance. To exist in this body is to constantly adapt, to relearn boundaries, to push and to pull back, often in the same breath.

This piece is not about fragility as weakness, but as persistence. It is about existing in a body that demands awareness, patience and resilience. It is about the strength it takes to function when stability is never guaranteed and the quiet, ongoing act of holding yourself together, even when it feels like you are unraveling.
