Dark Side Of Breast Cancer Stage 2
This series was created from a place that is deeply personal to me, rooted in fear, love, and ultimately, survival.
When my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer, everything shifted. It wasn’t just a medical journey, it was emotional, psychological, and deeply human. I witnessed strength in a way I had never understood before. Not loud or dramatic strength, but quiet, enduring resilience. The kind that shows up every day, even when fear is present.
These pieces are my way of processing that experience.
The body in these drawings is both familiar and fragmented. The chest, something so often associated with femininity, identity, and life itself, is disrupted, cracked, and overtaken by something invasive. The dark, branching forms represent the disease, but also the feeling of it, how it spreads, how it consumes, how it can feel like something foreign taking hold within your own body.
Each piece captures a different moment within that experience.
There is vulnerability in the exposed form, but also defiance. The body is not erased, it remains. Even as it is altered, even as it is challenged, it is still there. That was important to me. This isn’t about loss alone, it’s about presence, endurance, and the complexity of what it means to go through something like this.
What stayed with me most throughout my mum’s journey was the contrast, the fragility of the situation alongside an incredible, unwavering strength. That duality lives within these works. The softness of the human form against the harsh, chaotic intrusion of the illness.
These pieces are not just about breast cancer as a condition, they are about what it does to a person, and to the people around them. The fear, the uncertainty, the changes to the body, and the quiet courage it takes to face it all.
But above everything, this series is about survival.
My mum survived.
And that truth sits at the heart of this work. Beneath the darkness, beneath the distortion, there is something stronger that remains. These drawings are not just expressions of pain, they are acknowledgments of resilience, of endurance, and of the strength it takes to keep going.
This is my way of honoring that.
